Yoga & Resistance Bands

An inexpensive & easy way to add a bit of something extra to your physical Yoga practice.

What is a resistance band?

A resistance band is a stretchy band which can either be in one long piece, or looped. They come in different levels of resistance, meaning you can keep challenging yourself as your strength increases. Adding a resistance band to Yoga or exercises you are already doing, will bring a tonne of benefits. The resistance band can be used around your legs, arms or around a static object like a heavy chair.

What are the benefits of using a resistance band in my Yoga practice?

Adding a resistance band to your physical practice is a great way of reinvigorating poses that you now practice on autopilot. They are a way of staying connected & present in the pose, as we become more aware of what muscles are working and which ones aren’t.

Other benefits of using a resistance band in your Yoga practice include:

  • Building strength & muscle without having to lift heavy weights (this also means it’s better on your joints than lifting weights, so it’s brilliant if you suffer from joint pain).

  • Better control coming in and out of the poses – you don’t want that stretchy band slipping off and hitting you or the expensive vase on the table!

  • Strengthening your core, because you will be using your core to help you balance more and this in turn can help to reduce back pain

  • Increased flexibility, mobility & range of motion as we work muscles in new ways

  • They are inexpensive, super light (so easy to take away on holiday) and easy to use

  • If you are suffering from injuries, resistance bands can be used as part of your rehab

Resistance bands are particularly beneficial to use as we get older

Alongside all the other benefits of using a resistance band, they are highly beneficial to add to your Yoga practice as you get older. They help maintain muscle mass and increase bone strength, which lowers the risk of osteoporosis (this is especially important for women).

Using a resistance band whilst exercising or practicing Yoga is a type of functional movement, which is what we need more of as we age.

So next time you are looking to build a bit more strength, work your muscles in a different way or use your core more effectively, consider adding a resistance band to your Yoga practice. They are inexpensive, easy to use and results are normally seen within 2-4 weeks of a regular practice with them.

Our Yoga & Resistance Bands Classes are held on the last Tuesday of every month, in person & on Zoom at 6.30pm. Get in touch to book your space.
